The Eiger is one of the most iconic mountains in the Alps, with a storied history that is full of both tragedy and triumph. While the North Face of the Eiger remains a challenging test-piece, the Mitteleggi Ridge climbs an impressively aesthetic ridgeline over quality rock to a summit perched high above the Bernese Oberland.
Total Adventure
Approaching the Mittellegi Hut is an adventure in itself: we exit the train, rappel out of one of the viewing windows, and traverse a glacier to reach the one of the most outrageously perched huts in the Alps.
From the hut, we rise early and climb the many pitches up the ridge, sometimes using fixed ropes to speed up the process. From the summit it is a long descent down the South Ridge to the Mönchsjoch Hut where we can spend another night and make an ascent of the Mönch or Jungfrau, or descend to the valley on the cog rail.
